Distended Abdomen

  Back

Obesity is the most common cause of a distended abdomen. In unneutered female dogs, pregnancy and exaggerated phantom pregnancies are "normal" causes of a distended abdomen. Other clinical reasons for a distended abdomen include masses such as tumours in the belly, fluid (ascites) which develops most frequently as a result of liver or heart disease and a general enlargement of organs as a consequence of, for example womb infection (pyometra), immune disorders (enlarged spleen), or an overactive adrenal gland (enlarged liver). See us if your pet's abdomen is distended and you do not know why.
