What To Do If You Are Bitten By A Dog

  • Wash the wound immediately with antiseptic soap and warm water.
  • If your skin is punctured or torn, seek immediate medical treatment.
  • If your skin is punctured and you have not been vaccinated against tetanus in the last seven years, arrange for an immediate tetanus antitoxin injection.
  • If you are bitten by an unknown dog and are in a country where rabies is endemic arrange for immediate treatment with rabies antiserum. If you are offered treatment with an inexpensive local product or a more expensive imported one, take the expensive option.
  • If you are bitten by a loose dog report the bite to the police with a description of the dog.
  • If you are bitten by an owned dog, report the bite to the owners. If you are not satisfied with their response, report the bite to the police.
