Pregnant dogs require very little increase in food until late in pregnancy. (Cats are different. They need increasing food from early in pregnancy.) Increase a mother-to-be’s food by 10 percent per week during the last three weeks of her nine week pregnancy. Her energy requirements however, explode when she is producing milk for her pups (in part because bitch’s milk contains about 40 percent more energy than cow’s milk.) At the height of lactation she will need three times her daily food intake. Even after her pups reduce their milk consumption, her metabolism is so demanding she will continue to need 50 percent more than her normal kcal intake just to get back into standard condition. A puppy or performance food is ideal at this time.
